Genre(favorite band[favorite song])

Power (Sonata Arctica[My Land], Running Wild[Under Jolly Roger])
Neo-Classical (Rhapsody of Fire[Emerald Sword], Symphony X[The Odyssey])
Progressive (Thunderstone[Face in the Mirror], Symphony X)

Someboy forgot Pirate Metal.

I would have liked to pick:
Heavy (Iron Maiden[Run to the Hills], Dream Evil[Children of the Night])
Doom (Hammerfall[Hearts on Fire])

Running Wild[Under Jolly Roger])

I have been trying to remember to look up the name of this band for about a month. Thank you. I haven't heard this song in like twenty years, and was trying to describe it to a friend of mine who claims to be a metalhead (but said he'd never heard of that song). Goes along with the Helloween I'm listening to this week (KoTSK, Pt. I). In the name of Pirate Metal, I humbly submit: Riot - "Swords and Tequila". You may also enjoy UFO's "Rock Bottom" if you like the crusty old proto-metal (the solo on the live album kicks the crap outta the one in this clip, but what the heck, it's Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, how vintage is that?).

\m/

P.S. If you wanted to be UFO in 1975, you had to take your shirt off.Tongue

P.P.S. This is my new favorite thread. I learn about six new metal bands every day. Smiley

Another one of my favorite songs by Running Wild(I am still discovering them) is Genesis, on Black Hand Inn. It's one of those songs I like to call "epic songs" because they tell an epic story. Songs like The Odyssey and Divine Wings of Tragedy(by Symphony X), which are 24 and 20 minutes long respectively, and Symphony of Enchanted Lands(by Rhapsody of Fire), which is 13 minutes long. Genesis is 15 minutes long and tells a story about the Planet X, the Annunaki, and Armageddon.

Dude,

Next time you tell someone that their music is boring, and then have the balls to post a nine-and-a-half minute song, at least link to a video with moving images or a band that doesn't sound like an old Fleetwood Mac jam with their roadie singing. Tongue

So all death metal bands have to have either an elf or an orc as a vocalist, huh? What is it, union rules? \m/

I meant boring as in athousandbandssoundlikethistiredshit, and linked you to unique band currently making music, which i also find to be beautiful. Also, it takes a while to get into growls for vocals, but when you do you want nothing else.

@yahoo: Thank you. I liked the second reply better. I still haven't had a chance to check out all the bands you posted yesterday. I listened to Celtic Frost back in the day, but I haven't been really into death metal for about a decade or two. Actually that song you linked to sounded like Pelican with a singer, but after that "boring" comment, I had to bust your hump just a little. I didn't even take offense at the "old" part; that much, at least, is true. Tongue Wink laugh

@Odin: I am currently listening to the myspace page of Symphony X. Thanks. I'm currently in a prog-classical-thrash sort of mood, and this works perfectly. \m/ Cool

Grab yourself a copy of Nile's "In Their Darkened Shrines". Unas, Slayer Of The Gods will be well worth a listen if technical epicness is what you crave.

Take a look at Sarcophagus while your at it.

rivetheads, road dogs and metal merchants:

still checking out every band, song and album posted on this page

@Yahoo: enjoying the prog-metal (haven't made it to the other two sub-genre yet); the PT track I'm listening to right now sounds like Simon & Garfunkel (really liked Opeth, Agalloch, motW, Porcupine Tree and most of the others, so far; turns out Agalloch is in my town; imma go look for the record) Cool

@Kaleo: heavy stuff, awesome guitar work; I can see you like the tech death stuff Tongue

@Odin: listened to "The Odyssey" yesterday - great over-the-top symphonic metal Smiley

Mahalo, and thank you for your kokua.

I really like power metal, some of the bands I like are Rhapsody of Fire, Stratovarius, Heavenly etc...

But recently I've started to listen to the band 'Summoning', they're mostly Atmospheric Black Metal but some may argue that it's also Tolkien Metal.

Here's a good song from them, although they had to cut it since it was too long.

More Nile, of course:

Altaria also kicks amazing amounts of arse:

I've also been teaching myself how to play Holy Wars by Megadeth:

And if you think that's me, go stick your head in a toilet bowl and come back when you've gained some common sense.

You people have definitely affected my recent musical experiences:

Today's Sub-Sub-Genre: Dark Ambient Metal (Atmospheric and/or Symphonic Black Metal)

Summoning - "Long Lost to Where No Pathway Goes"

Wolves in the Throne Room - "I Will Lay Down My Bones"

Velvet Cocoon - "Avalon Polo"

Spectral Lore - "Through an Infinite Dreamscape"

Coldworld - "Winterreise"

Xasthur - "Walker of Dissonant Worlds"

Since we've been pretty much snowbound here since Saturday, we got our forty-year storm for the Solstice, and the skies are gray and gloomy, it suits the mood perfectly.

@Kaleo: What a difference between Nile and Altaria. One is definitely heavier than what I listen to, while the other is somewhat lighter. As far as Megadeth goes, Dave Mustaine fucking rocks, just like he has for the past 25 years.

P.S. The latest entries in the fanfic thread were somewhat influenced by all of the music you fuckers, wikipedia, myspace and youtube have recently exposed me to.

I just reminded myself of Venom.
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=fHmzFVDjVnM

And here's a Dimmu Borgir version of that song:

Also, if symphonic black metal is your thing, then you cannot miss Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse.

Checked out the Dimmu Borgir and the Nile (and Nile-dudes other dark ambient solo project).

Love Megadeth (always have, always will).

I just listened to that Venom song (that tune barely qualifies for the genre it helped to create). Tongue

Right now I'm listening to The Answer, which is not exactly metal, but right next door, in the blues-base hard rock genre (they even do a cover of "Sweet Emotion": it sounds like Coverdale). Tongue

Did you dudes check out Red Fang - "Prehistoric Dog" yet? It's got beer and melee combat!

"Sorry, this chain mail doesn't cover all of me. I have emotions still."

Why are you listening to Death Metal then?

I'm quite sure I will be able to find a few people in THIS topic who like Death. Seeing as it's tied for 1st in the poll atm.

Here Comes The Kraken have been rocking my jocks lately, check them out. Thanks for the necrobump, I think... Iabz0.o, Please, for the love of all that is metal, DEAR GOD PLEASE! Do not get troll this thread like you did to mine and get it locked. I was simply asking if anyone knew any bands similar to Bring Me The Horizon, Here Comes The Kraken or Lamb of God. Some actual help and less pathetic attempts to insult's would be nice.

@ Player1, medageth are innovaters, I listen to some pretty heavy stuff, but I still like some Megadeth. Hanger 18 FTW!

@ IabzO.o, Please, feel free to spam me with pathetic homo insults:
Quote
Coming from the guy with a penis in his mouth.pay for male prostitute all you want, because of my sexuality, I just tend to ignore homosexual like you. You like men so much, that's why you bought a foot long dildo. I just keep on talking to women, because I like them. I, unlike most of the Tremulous Community, don't give a shit about 'gay' sex. I don't fuck men because I am not a faggot. You just keep on suckin' balls, maybe if you suck hard enough, you'll get a surprise.
Insulting me with a sad, sad troll is fine, but I clearly remember reading 'most of the tremulous community'. I'll leave it up to my fellow metallers to decide for themselves.

Hey Frazzler.

PROTIP: Maybe if you don't tell people to flame you, you won't get flamed, and maybe you will enjoy the forums more. Or, you could pick fights with people, tell them to "bring it on," and then act all butthurt and confused when people are mean to you.  Sad

Death/Power/Viking (which isn't really a subgenre, but I just like Ensiferum that much Tongue) here. I'm listening to "Iesous" by Bloodbath right now (guest appearance from Chris Alvestam ftw).
Bolt Thrower + Tremulous = epic winsauce.
Anywho, what about symphonic metal (not symphonic black metal) bands like Kamelot or Epica? Those are awesome too, but they're not in the poll. Sad
