Tremulous Locking Up

Hi all,

I just ordered a new computer and it has never been able to run Tremulous properly without it freezing up.  I cannot ctrl+alt+del out of these lock-ups.  I must reboot.

System Specs:
Intel Pentium Dual-Core 1.6GHz Processor
2048 MB DDR2 Ram
nVidia Geforce 8500GT 512MB PCI-Express video card
OS: Win XP

I have reformatted, updated my BIOS, and have the latest chipset drivers, video card drivers, sound card drivers, installed DirectX.

I called my hardware vendor and they say that Tremulous may not support a dual core processor.  I tried to Set Affinity to one processor while running Trem, but it still freezes.

Sometimes it freezes after 1 minute, sometimes after 1 hour.  I'm reaching the end of my chain here.  Anything would be helpful.

Thank you.

PS: I saw another guy on these forums with the same problem, but his problem disappeared without a specific fix.  .. much to my dismay.

Re: Tremulous Locking Up

Judging from when you said CTRL+ALT+DELETE I'm going to assume you're on Windows... You didn't mention updating the operating system in general so I recommend going to Microsoft update, follow through with that and you should have it running without crashes!

Re: Tremulous Locking Up

That behavior sounds suspiciously like broken cooling on the gfx and/or underdimensionised psu.

Re: Tremulous Locking Up

Yes, I am using Windows XP (added it to the original post).  I have all the latest updates from Windows Updates.

Overheating was what I thought it was too, and it's still an option.  My graphics card is a fanless card.  It is really hot when I shut down after the game crashes, but then again, it's also quite hot when no major programs are running.

Re: Tremulous Locking Up

Fanless are fine, when no real secondary heat source like a harddrive or a hot cpu are in play AND the case has loads of other fans that keep the cool air flowing.

As for the loadless temperature...
It is kinda irrelevant what temp the gfx has when no 3D apps are running. Most modern cards will function properly in 2D mode even outside their temp-specs and only crash systems when 3D is required.

Re: Tremulous Locking Up

How many case fans do you have?  Where are they?  EG, I have on rear, blowing out, one side, blowing in, and one front, blowing in.  Plus, ofc, the PSU fan(s), blowing out.

Re: Tremulous Locking Up

Currently I have one on the front blowing in, but I just put that in last night after I read Caveman's post.  I'm looking to get two on the front blowing in and one on the back blowing out.  I'll update this post when that happens.
Thanks.

Re: Tremulous Locking Up

Try some other 3d games. Run trem when GPU is not hot, and after trem has crashed (and in case its cause of overheating, GPU should be hot), run it again and see how fast it crashes again.

Re: Tremulous Locking Up

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem. My notebook is locking up, when playing tremulous for about 5-10min.

XP Pro SP2 fully updated (drivers, etc.)
Amilo Pro V3515
1,5Gb Ram
Via Unichrome 9 V896 IGP.

I've tried a lot of things:
Other 3D games or intense CPU-using programs run perfect. But all games with Quake3 engine are locking up :-(

So, for me i think its not a heat-problem, but a incompatible driver to quake3-engine issue.

What do you think? Any suggestions?

Re: Tremulous Locking Up

Yes, throw it away and get one with a gfx-card that supports OGl.
Your problem is that the 3D is only simulated by your CPU and thus it builds up the heat like there is no tomorrow.
Since the Amilo's CPU-Cooler is not made to handle the constant heat the CPU overheats and then shuts down.

Re: Tremulous Locking Up

I have the same problem on Linux mint and Im running dualcore processors that can definetely handle this.  And as for his comment on the Ctrl+alt+delete that goes for ALL shortcuts.  And the mouse does not respond either.  All other processes  on the computer work perfectly.  I have found no way to end the program other than restarting the computer.

The problem begins about 10-20 minutes into gameplay.  The window exits fullscreen and then the keyboard and mouse fails.  There is no excessive heat being generated.

4. Get in
5. Play tremulous

Re: Please Stand Up

I'm there now. Sssssoooo ccccollllddddd. But sssssoooooo wwwwwworrrtthhh it.

P.S. It runs fine on a MacBook with a GMA950 integrated-gpu (shares memory w/CPU). Got a nice little MacMice cooling stand, but the internal fans are still going like crazy. Airport & Bluetooth enabled and running (wireless modem, mouse, keyboard & DVI external monitor). Get a fair framerate w/ everything on, but I turn almost everything off (it seems a lot less "sticky" in skirmishes).
