Don't kill karma   I'm on a mission to get -100 without actually posting anything degrading or insultive.  So far I've reached -5 from 3 posts :O

I still don't get why they would do that. I've never seen another forum where members can't have avatars (at least not where they've got the technology in place to let them), so that should underline the illogic of all this.

You need to have X number of posts before you can modify karma, X being a number that I don't know.  More than you have, less than I have

That something can be done does not mean it's a good thing to do. I'm not going to delve into this any further but I'm not bothered by the lack of avatars, and certainly not by the lack of annoying ones.

You shouldn't turn off all avatars just because a few people would make annoying ones. And as much as I may not hold much of this community in the highest regards for their taste in imagery, I refuse to believe that a large portion of the userbase would use annoying avatars.

So they could just turn them on for everyone, and then deactivate them on an individual basis as needed. That wouldn't take much effort, and there's no reason to keep the rest of us out of the fun because of a few.

....WTF is up with the random people having avatars?. Its not a "modmin" thing because I still don't have the ability to have an avatar but i've noticed quite a few completely random people have them.

There is a turn off signatures.. why not a turn off avatars for those who don't like them?.. i personally think it adds a lot of personality to the forums.

What's the purpose of karma anyway, I have -3 and I haven't flamed anyone, insulted anyone, trolled. I have attempted to help at least 2-3 people since it started. The only reason I can imagine why I have this -ve karma is that someone doesn't like my explanation or my attempt at assistance. I'm not complaining (though it might sound like it) but I just don't really see the point.

If there is a point to it perhaps it should be limited to mods + people with a karma of +50. The reason being is that people with a +50 have been given the positive karma by the mods and others who are doing the right thing. I know initially it will be a bit of extra work for the mods, but if it's only going to be abused then why have it?

No, something that high is good, or there could be a lot of people karma-ing.

This might be too hard to do, but maybe you can only become a karma-er if 50% or so of your +karmas are from mods, otherwise friends could boost each other up, sock puppets, etc.

Also, in the member list, we should be able to list by post, location, join date, etc, like we did before, and also list by karma, so people can instantly see who is helpful and who is not. (Or rather who is liked by the community and who is not.)

Like with most irrelevant things, you people deem this Karma system a lot more important than it actually is. Wether you have -999 or +999 next to your name, iit does not really matter. It only shows that people spent time on you.

in theory it could encourage some people to post more useful stuff than useless stuff. though rating individual posts instead is much better, in my opinion. at least that can be advisory "this post was totally useless", so i probably don't want to read it.
