Would anyone be willing to write up something on how to port maps from other games? (IE: Xiane did Infested Pump Station from Gloom)

In the most basic sense, tremulous-specific required entities need to be added to the map (info_player_intermission, spawn points, etc.), non-tremulous entities need to be removed, and the map re-compiled for tremulous. An example  of this is Hamunaptra by DASPRiD, a map originally for the Urban Terror mod.

IIRC Xiane did not port the gloom maps, but made the tremulous versions from scratch using the original gloom maps as a reference, as did Jex.

Whether maps made for other games lend themselves to tremulous gameplay is another issue though. The porting process may involve substantial modification to make a map playable in trem.

As was said above, just alittle bit adding on:

If the game uses other engine than Q3 it is most likely that you will have to start map from scratch, or if you are a good programmer you might write a script, which will convert the map for other game into a desired *.map for tremulous, it will save you all the brushwork, but as for textures, shaders and entities, you will have to rework them.

With Q3 engine based games its a bit easier, you just need to remove incompatable entities and shaders from the map (and script files as well) and replace them with tremulous analogues.


Personally I have converted the CTF-Face map for WolfET, and it took about 48 hours to port all the brushwork, texturing is another story, and all due to the fact that UT engine allows you to use substract brushes, whether Q3 engine only allows ADD brushes.

afaik xiane started the map completely from scratch, and remade the whole thing to fit tremulous, only using the original as a guideline. either that, or he lied when i asked him :-?

Xiane's ports would be infinitely better if he just copied & pasted the original brushwork.
