So, this seems to be the most relevant place for this, and it doesn't appear that it's been done before...

Haven't you always wanted your very own granger to keep in your pocket? Now you can get one, for less than $10! Buy a granger action figure right here! For every model that sells I will donate $1 to Tremulous.

Please Note: I don't claim ownership of the original Tremulous models, of course! All I've done is strip the keyframes out and make the mesh manifold so it can be printed. The edited model file is also available for download at the link above, if any of you happen to have your own 3D printers and want to try it.

Shapeways offers a lot of different print materials to choose from, and I think I may order myself a little steel granger. As soon as I have one to show I'll add pictures for you all.

3D printing services open up the possibility of making all kinds of neat things, and I've actually been thinking about Tremulous toys for awhile now. If there's interest in this, I'm considering continuing the idea with:
> adding textures for full-color sandstone printing
> adding hollow space inside the models to reduce material use & printing cost
> adding details to the models from the texture/smoothing the models
> creating full playsets for aliens and humans (all the buildables, various weapons/equipment/poses for humans)
> creating fully posable Tremulous action figures, with removable/interchangeable gear for humans

Let me know if you all have other ideas you'd like to see implemented, or if you know of another 3D printing service that offers lower printing costs, or even if you just think this is a bad idea.

If the Tremulous team prefers that I take this down, I will of course do so at their request.

Mmm... Shapeways doesn't offer a flexible material like silicon rubber, only slightly flexible plastics and rigid things like glass and metal.

As it happens, Shapeways started a trial for black elasto plastic the very day you made this comment.

Just saw that... redesigning the granger as a squeeky toy sounds like an interesting project, I'll give it a go. I have no idea if this material would be safe for your dog to have in his mouth though... they say that all of their materials aren't safe for food use, though I can't see how glass or ceramic could be dangerous if it's been washed.

I just ordered a black plastic version, just to see how it comes out, so I'll put up pics of that as soon as I get it.

How big are they?  Would it be possible to put it on a key chain?

I might get two, one granger is a lonely granger, but two grangers is party time!

How big are they?  Would it be possible to put it on a key chain?

Thats tiny.... When i first saw this topic i thought 'real life dimensions', and lets say 80 units = 2m so granger (1.1) would be like 1 or 1.5 meters wide, long and high... woah.

Sorry to keep you folks waiting, here is a look at the cheap version of the granger model that I finally got. Click for larger images:

It's about the size of a quarter, made from the "Black Strong & Flexible" material on Shapeways, so the surface texture is a bit rough. Pocket-size for your convenience.

Anybody who wants a granger model can upload the model themselves, in any size they want and with any alterations they want, at a lower price because of not having to also pay Fox One. They can then use all the money they saved to donate to Tremulous if they so desire.

Certainly, I made my edited version of the model downloadable on the item page for this very reason (link for the lazy). If any of you happen to have a 3D printer at home you could print your own from that file as well. If you want to set up your own account with Shapeways, then upload the model and get it that way, then by all means do so (you'll save $3).

Please Note: Don't try to print the original game model, use my edited version or do your own fixes. The original model is game-engine optimized, so it's non-manifold and won't print properly.

I converted the original granger directly into .obj and uploaded him without any errors.

By my rough calculations, he's added a markup of 5 dollars on top of the price shapeways sells it for (at least with the cheapest materials) and bear in mind they'll have a markup of their own and that what you're usually paying for in such businesses is the use of their machines not the cost to them of using them. So the shipping costs are indeed greater than the cost to produce because the cost to produce is tiny.

in addition, international shipping is expensive.
